GRAFFITI IN PRISON - JULY 2006
In July I was invited to the H.M.P Chelmsford Prison in Essex by the learning and skills manager Susan Clayton. Juliet Martin (chelmsford arts development) introduced myself, Reakt and Lisa (deep green art) as people who could potentially make art projects work within the prison.
I was actually really dubious about doing this project initially, prison being a place I really wanted to avoid at all costs.
After our initial visit and security checks /briefings e.t.c. we ran the project over 5 days.
The first day we met the group of 5 inmates, explained to them what the project was about and that we really wanted them to come up with the ideas and the theme for the mural.
This actually worked really well. The team we worked with were very motivated and came up with loads of really good ideas. In the four days that followed our initial design meeting, we painted the mural in the prison yard.
I do a lot of workshops and I teach a wide range of people spray-can-art, but I don't often get the chance to work with
adults, it was a pleasure working with this particular group.
They picked up the painting techniques and little tricks of the trade we use when spraying, faster than any group I've ever worked with before.
So believe, when you look at the mural the prisoners done most of the work on that.
The the words (chosen by the prisoners) say "freedom" & "choice" .
After being initally a little bit uneasy about working in a prison, I am so glad I went ahead and did the project it was a real eye opener!
Being in Prison just for 5 days was horrible. Everyone was really nice to us though, except for a few of the staff that spouted stuff to us about how they felt the project was totally inappropriate.
Everyones entitled to there own opinion, I guess!
Any way big up ya chest if we met you in there, thanks for your help and special respect goes out to the boys ...Phil B. V. Kerr.
C Lowe. Woody. & R.A. Murphy,
